David Pottruck Joins BeautifulPlaces Advisory
Board
Former Schwab CEO touts young company’s vacation
market approach
01 September 2005 -- David S. Pottruck, chairman of
Eos Airlines, a new North Atlantic premium carrier,
and former CEO of the Charles Schwab Corporation,
has joined the Advisory Board of BeautifulPlaces.
In his board role, Pottruck will advise the
two-year-old company on matters related to growth
strategies, marketing and best practices. BeautifulPlaces
is a lodging company that manages and markets
the rental of exquisite homes and estates in
Napa/Sonoma wine country.
Pottruck says that the company’s concept appeals
to people like him who already have the means
to vacation in beautiful homes but are not interested
in buying, owning and maintaining vacation properties,
or joining the new breed of private residence
clubs that require high upfront payments and
annual fees. “BeautifulPlaces’ approach doesn’t
require a huge capital outlay yet provides the
same quality and variety of homes as the residence
clubs for the market segment they serve.”
He also thinks the company has a smart strategy
and that it has shown impressive growth in just
two years. “BeautifulPlaces understands the
affluent food and wine leisure traveler and
has developed a product and array of services
designed to meet their needs for a highly personalized
lifestyle experience,” says Pottruck. “The opportunity
is great and BeautifulPlaces is well-positioned
to seize upon it.”
“Dave's participation will be of immense help
to us,” says Patrick Smith, BeautifulPlaces'
founder and president. "He knows about building
businesses. During his tenure as Schwab's president,
client assets grew from $66 billion to $1.08
trillion. His direct-mail innovations produced
millions of new accounts and his brand-building
campaign made Schwab a household name. Dave
has already provided significant input to BeautifulPlaces
and we look forward to his continuing contribution
as we grow.”
Pottruck is chairman and CEO of Red Eagle Ventures,
a San Francisco private equity firm, and has
been a director of Intel Corporation since 1998.
He also serves as a Senior Fellow at the Center
for Leadership and Change Management at the
Wharton School of Business. In 2000, Pottruck
co-authored a best-selling book, Clicks and
Mortar – Passion-Driven Growth in an Internet-Driven
World.
Smith says BeautifulPlaces will be adding additional
powerhouse members to its Advisory Board in
the coming months, including luminaries from
the wine, culinary and travel industries. “Our
Advisory Board will play a critical role in
helping the company realize its vision in the
shortest time possible and in guiding our ongoing
operations.”
