Moonstone - St. Helena, Napa County

The seemingly infinite sweep of Napa Valley’s celebrated vineyards provides a rustic counterpoint to the bold contemporary lines and dramatic contours of this superb estate located on 20 acres of premium Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the heart of wine country.

Exterior

Moonstone estate is a striking architectural statement that connects to the land in an organic and wholly original way. Hand-mortared fieldstone walls, quarried from the vineyards, soar up past the antique terracotta roof tiles from Bordeaux to the azure skies, blending effortlessly with the sleek, elegant styling of this modern masterpiece.

Set in the middle of some of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards, Moonstone has 360-degree views of the Valley and both the Mayacamas mountains that divide the Napa and Sonoma valleys and the Vaca mountains beyond the Silverado Trail. Legendary wineries abound in this region, from the well-known names like Mondavi, Coppola and Opus One to new and unique wineries such as Tres Sabores, Blackbird and Plumpjack’s ultra-green Cade Winery.

Equally numerous are highly awarded restaurants like Thomas Keller’s French Laundry and Ad Hoc, trailblazing chef Cindy Pawlcyn’s Go Fish, Mustard’s and Backstreet Kitchen, and other notable dining spots like Bistro Jeanty, Michael Chiarello’s Bottega and The Wine Spectator restaurant at the Culinary Institute’s historic Greystone location.

Guests at Moonstone can also enjoy leisurely gatherings on the spectacular grounds of the estate, where raised vegetable beds offer a profusion of fresh produce and you can pick juicy navel oranges and figs from the nearby grove. An outdoor kitchen—complete with a custom stone island with grill and warming trays, and a wood-fired brick pizza oven—invites al fresco dining day or evening. A wrought-iron table and chairs with bright patterned tablecloths that can seat 10-12 brings a hint of Tuscany to the setting. And, as evening falls, the open fireplace, inset into the wall, casts a warm glow and outdoor lighting adds a festive air to the expansive entertainment area, spotlighting the stands of olive trees and accenting the textures of the stone walls.

The main house is composed of two wings that emanate from the great room and enclose a central courtyard dotted with citrus trees and a sculpted fountain. The wings end at the pool and two separate buildings: the guest house and a workout room and sauna, which look out to the pool and the vineyards. The grounds are covered in a sand-tone, decomposed granite that offsets the green and gold of the vines and the linear rows of 135-year-old olive trees. Plane trees flank the front entrance, and a two-car garage enclosed garage is off to the side.

Interior

The natural stone and pisé walls of Moonstone Estate rise out of the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards that surround the home and create a private setting with boundless views on all sides. The entrance with its wall of windows and glass doors, sets the stage for the scale of the interior. The great room; an expansive space with 17-foot vaulted ceilings and Jerusalem tile floors that encompasses the living area, the dining room and the kitchen, exudes a feeling of freedom and fluid movement.

Rough wood timbers branch out from a massive metal beam that runs the length of the room and is topped with skylights for indirect light. The wall that opens to the interior courtyard repeats the entrance design with 11-foot-high windows and glass doors, and is oriented to capture the morning light, while the entrance basks in the western rays of the sun.

The great room’s key role is to bring people together to talk, play, dine and share in the pleasures of the wine country. Four huge circular metal chandeliers light and define the various sections of the space. In front of the tall brick and metal fireplace a comfortably elegant arrangement of sofas entice guests to relax and dream in front of the flickering fire. In the formal dining area, a custom-made round table lets guest share in the delicious foods from this abundant region and engage in animated conversation across the candlelit surface.

The ultra-modern Bulthaup kitchen is a marvel of top-level appliances and fixtures, from a Sub Zero refrigerator to a built-in Miele coffeemaker, carefully planned to recede into flush cabinets and drawers coated with a low metallic sheen. Built as a “floating island” it has two dishwashers, trash, recycling and storage, and stainless steel counters that face out to different areas of the great room. A blond wood conversation bar with metal stools gives friends a chance to kibitz with the cook at the six-burner Wolf range. Another counter faces the courtyard and contains a large sink for prepping ingredients. A third counter has a sink, under counter warming trays, oven, microwave, and a pass-through counter to the dining room. The fourth side has a recessed European-style grill with hood and a brick backsplash and an adjoining recessed wood-burning fireplace built into the wall.

Doors lead to the outdoor dining area from the kitchen and dining room, allowing guests to mingle and gather at the long wrought iron table outside, stroll the grounds, or sip a glass of wine under the shade of an olive tree and savor the Napa Valley’s unparalleled climate.

Two wings extend from the great room to the pool and broad corridors run the length of the wing. Each has exposed fieldstone and stucco walls with floors of Jerusalem tile and wide windows to the interior courtyard.

Just off the kitchen is the wine room, temperature-controlled for storage, with a door that leads to the outside dining are—so your chilled Chardonnay can go right to the table. Further on is the laundry room with additional storage, a second refrigerator/freezer and a concrete counter with sink.

Double carved wooden doors can close off the corridor to the sleeping area beyond. The master bathroom has all the amenities of a luxurious spa, with ultra-modern fixtures and design, two vanities carved from reclaimed wood with contemporary sinks set against a mirrored wall, separate toilet, a Celadon tile shower, radiant floor heating and an oversized porcelain soaking tub where you can unwind and daydream as you gaze out the windows to the olive trees and vineyards.

Around a corner is a large walk-in closet and dressing room, and at the end of the corridor is the master bedroom—a sumptuous, yet understated suite with a beamed, vaulted ceiling, the home’s signature Jerusalem tile floors and exposed fieldstone and stucco walls in a muted shade. The king bed envelops you in fine linens and a flatscreen TV on the wall offers movies and programs. A seating area looks out to the pool and glass doors open to the courtyard and pool area, and the ambient light, from the floor-to-ceiling windows, bring a soft luminescence to the room.

The second wing is off the great room and also features Jerusalem tile floors and stucco and exposed fieldstone walls. The first room doubles as a den or media room, where you can sink into the soft leather chairs and couch and watch a movie or challenge a friend to a game. Tall windows look out to a front courtyard and its water feature, and a door leads to a full bath. Sophisticated European fixtures like an egg-shaped sink with veneered vanity and an oval toilet are ergonomically designed and set off by a mirrored wall and large opaque glass shower wall.

Double carved wooden doors in the corridor open to the guest bedroom suite. A spacious bathroom is highlighted with the soft hues of the open Celadon tile shower with its rectangular rain head shower. There is a contemporary pedestal sink, radiant heat floors and a mirrored wall with a large walk-in closet and dressing room—all with tasteful fixtures and accessories.

The guest bedroom suite enjoys views to the pool and to the vineyards on the north and to the interior courtyard. A vintage-inspired 4-poster king bed adds an eclectic element to the room that plays against the beamed ceilings and fieldstone and stucco walls. There is also a sitting area and a flatscreen TV. Guests can access the pool area directly through glass doors.

The pool gives swimmers a chance for a workout with its long length, and the lush green lawns provide the perfect place to lounge and soak up the sun under cloudless blue skies.

On the opposite side of the pool are a guest house and a separate workout room. Both structures are designed with the same fieldstone walls as the main home. The light and airy guest quarters have a queen bed with an antique wood frame, beamed ceiling and stone floors. There is a walk-in closet with an under-counter refrigerator. The full bathroom features contemporary fixtures and a tile shower. Windows on three sides of the guest house offer tranquil views of the vineyards and the entry door leads to the pool.

The workout room lets you rev up for your adventures exploring the Napa Valley, and a cedar sauna is just the place for the end of your wine-tasting day. Beamed ceilings, floors and windows all around make this a great spot to work out. There is a large bathroom with a tiled shower, a counter and sink with three faucets, so swimmers and sunbathers can pop in and freshen up. There is also a stone countertop in the main room with icemaker, storage and frig below and a flatscreen TV above. Watch it from the treadmill or the comfortable couch.

Moonstone offers a wine country experience like no other—one you will want to share with special friends and family. This truly unique estate set in the heart of one of the best-known wine regions in the world, will connect you to the land and the fabled vineyards of the Napa Valley in a new and exciting way every day of your stay here.
