Overview
This is the Tiburon only the locals know—spectacular water views, the best weather and just over the bridge from San Francisco. Paradise by the Bay has it all: romance, recreation and rejuvenation.
Exterior
The soothing sound of gentle waves lap against the shore below, a lone white crane strides the beach with stately steps, and in the distance, sailboats practice intricate maneuvers on the calm blue waters of San Francisco Bay.
Each day in this magical setting brings a changing scene, from the still dawn of a bright, clear morning to the nourishing rays of the warm midday sun and the fiery gold and orange hues of sunset as the sky and sea turn to deep, cobalt blue. Abundant windows all share part of the boundless view and doors to the decks and terraces take advantage of the nearly perfect Marin county climate.
Broad stone steps lead down to the lawn and gardens, where mature oak trees intermingle with native plants and brilliant seasonal flowers. The deep azure pool sparkles with glints of sunlight and a cabana and bar proclaims this to be “The Land of Happiness.” On the hillside in an idyllic nook among Japanese maple trees is the massage sanctuary—a muslin-tented spa for the ultimate in relaxing massage. Nearby, the pool house and changing room has a refreshing outdoor shower to top off your swim or spa treatment.
Sunny expanses of velvety, green grass beckon for a game of croquet or badminton and don’t miss a chance to play on the newly resurfaced championship tennis court. Just make sure your opponent faces the water view and its irresistible attraction. Spectators can drink in the magnificent beauty and watch the match from an elevated gazebo surrounded by tall pine trees.
Paradise by the Bay was designed to meld effortlessly with its terrain. The small hillocks and gentle slopes can be explored on the pathways that wind through the estate under tall shade trees and along the waterfront. Not far from the front door, you’ll cross an arched wooden bridge to a studio in a small meadow clearing. The meditative space and outdoor deck provides a tranquil oasis for a writer or artist.
Children and adults alike will be charmed by the playground with its whimsical animal sculptures, and will love the two-story treehouse—every kid’s dream of a special hideaway. Benches are hewn from felled trees and the giant sandbox even has its own view of the water.
Natural grasses and native plants that line the trails are punctuated by stands of silky plumes of pampas grass and a stairway takes you down to the beach where you can search for shells or take the rowboat out into the bay. The cove is also a favorite spot for kayakers.
An expansive wood deck juts out from the pool area over the beach below like the prow of an ocean liner, complete with deck chairs for sunning and gazing at the horizon where sky and land blend in a soft blue haze. It’s a natural place to gather at the end of the day, warmed by the firepit as you watch the setting sun paint the sky with vivid strokes of color.
Paradise by the Bay embodies the spirit of the early settlers of the 1800’s who found a greater treasure than gold in San Francisco Bay—they carved out a lasting connection to the unique lands and magnificent setting on the edge of the Pacific.
Interior
Paradise by the Bay takes you into the Tiburon that only locals know, allowing you to experience the spectacular vistas and the serene environment with complete freedom and privacy, both from the home and the grounds. Set on nearly seven acres, this gated estate borders the bay in a protected cove. Landscaped with trails and paths for easy exploration, it features a championship tennis court, pool and private beach, as well as outdoor dining and entertaining areas.
The home is filled with natural light, its free-flowing contemporary design creating an intoxicating sense of openness and connection to the surroundings. A subdued color palette throughout enhances the well-chosen art and furnishings and intensifies the aquamarine water vistas. Multiple levels, decks and terraces draw you out to an unbroken panorama that stretches from the northern end of the bay to the distant hills in the east, and south towards the jutting Tiburon peninsula that protects the cove from wind and weather.
The living room and dining room face the waterfront with a continuous wall of windows and doors to the deck. You and your guests will delight in having this stunning scenery as the backdrop to dinners and parties. Designed with entertaining in mind, the estate is a sensational place for celebrations and special occasions.
In the kitchen, windows above the sink frame a skyline that is sure to distract the most diligent cook. Open to the family room, the kitchen has a Wolf range and Viking appliances and a conversation counter for casual dining. With a brick fireplace to warm the early mornings or evenings, the family room is a welcoming place to sink into a couch and read or chat. Glass doors lead to the broad wooden deck that overlooks the pool and the bay for alfresco dining for up to 12 guests.
On the opposite side of the room, doors access an open-air interior courtyard, sheltered by arbors of climbing vines. The kitchen has a grill, gas stovetop, refrigerator, serving bar and comfortable woven furniture. The handcrafted stone design with its low, rustic walls and open wood fireplace create a country ambiance perfect for an afternoon barbeque and a refreshing cool drink.
Just steps away is the Music Room, which, over the years, has been an intimate salon for many musical recitals and impromptu performances—some by well-known artists. A Steinway piano awaits, ready for the next keyboard virtuoso to impress his audience.
At the far corner of the upper floor, the master bedroom and bath enjoy an uninterrupted sweep of the bay. The serene atmosphere creates a mood of luxuriant indulgence. A leisurely soak in the jetted tub with its view of tall trees or a steamy shower takes you out of the hectic daily pace, and the private deck with its mesmerizing views may be just the place for a romantic toast as warm breezes play over the waters and a million stars fill the evening sky.
A second spacious bedroom is on this level, with private bath, skylight, and glass doors to the exterior. Three additional generous bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are on the lower level, two feature captivating views of their own and private exits to the grounds. On this level is an airy library and media room with its own tile patio. The corner of the deck provides an overhang for an island-style outdoor lanai that calls for music and tropical drinks. And on the lowest terrace is a large room that can double as an entertainment or game room.
