This extraordinary home, styled after a French chateau, sits high above the renowned Napa Valley and was built to match the unequalled views it enjoys of this celebrated wine region.
Exterior
Picture yourself floating…buoyed by cool, blue waters that seem to merge with the horizon as you gaze out over the Napa Valley from a 60-foot-long infinity pool. The sun journeys overhead and delicious aromas from the grill drift your way, wafting from a professionally equipped outdoor kitchen sheltered under the slate roof of an open-air gazebo. After lunch, recline on one of the chaise lounges, enjoying the warmth of the sun and continue your dreams about the fabled wine country of the Napa Valley.
This dream is yours to experience at Villa Vigne, one of the most spectacular locations in the Napa Valley. The extraordinary private estate of nearly 40 acres is on the same high slopes as the renowned Auberge du Soleil, just a canyon away. As you travel up the road to Villa Vigne, you pass neatly tended vineyards that produce the prized grapes for some of the world’s most legendary and sought-after wines—each property designed with reverence for the unique setting it occupies.
When the gates to the estate swing open, the road becomes a cushiony surface of decomposed granite. Nearing the residence, the granite turns into brick that lines the circular drive to the door. A stone portico continues seamlessly into the grand entryway and its soaring ceilings. The vivid green swath of the Napa Valley is visible from the front doors in an unobstructed view that reaches all the way through the house.
Landscaped to complement the elegant symmetry of the home and to integrate with the natural environment, gnarled oaks overlook trim boxed hedges, and graceful madrone trees with their smooth, rust-colored bark co-exist with olive trees, rosemary and native grasses—all designed to ensure privacy and seclusion so that you can freely savor the one-of-a-kind views from all areas of this remarkable home.
On the western-facing walls of the Villa Vigne, the cypress trees that reach up from the pool terrace level help define the curved contours of the exterior. An ornamental balustrade outlines the upper terraces, which unite in a middle balcony section that can be used for dining or as a place to mingle and share a glass of wine while you watch the iridescent oranges and reds of the sunset streak the sky with their brilliant hues.
Stairs lead down to the magnificent open spaces of the lower terrace with its dramatic infinity pool and a unique “vanishing edge” spa hot tub that lets you relax in its waters while you seem to hang in space drinking in the views. Recharge indoors in the fitness center, complete with workout machines, free weights, TV monitors, a full bath, massage room and a sauna.
The terrace is a wonderful setting for casual daytime pool parties or lunchtime events, it is also perfect for afternoon or evening cocktail parties, special occasions, celebrations and memorable dinners. As the day wanes, subdued lighting guides your way along the paths and creates a festive mood. End your day in this magical place as the sun makes its way to the western mountains in a burst of dazzling color. The views provide a scenic backdrop and the myriad lights of the stars overhead create the dazzling décor that can’t be duplicated by man.
Interior
As the circular drive reaches the entrance of Villa Vigne, you encounter your first glimpse of the thrilling vistas that this incomparable location enjoys. Tall glass doors and curved picture windows look all the way through the great room to the western mountains. Step into the foyer, flanked by massive columns that rise to the top of the two-story cathedral ceiling, and notice the special quality of the light that saturates the room. Champagne-colored stone floors and hand-stuccoed walls create a luminous backdrop for the vivid colors of the scenery, framed by broad windows in every room.
The great room welcomes guests with artfully arranged seating areas, plush sofas and chairs in varying earth tones and a floor-to-ceiling cast concrete gas fireplace. Designed to accentuate the vistas, the muted colors of the home and its furnishings act to integrate the bright blue skies and green landscapes of the Napa Valley into every aspect of this estate. Abundant picture windows and doors create a flow to the outdoors and even more astounding views.
A graceful arched passageway to the formal dining room is a form repeated throughout the home. The room is contained, but connected to the great room and the kitchen so guests can move freely among the public areas. Light the candles at the beveled glass table and create a special mood for your meals, accompanied by the stunning vistas, or decide to experience the warm breezes and gentle climate first-hand and dine al fresco on the upper terrace, surrounded by deep green hillsides and a seemingly endless blue sky.
The kitchen is a chef’s delight with stone counters and center island, all trimmed with carved wood accents in a cocoa tone. A six-burner Viking range with oven and grill, double sinks, warming ovens in the center island and all stainless steel appliances puts everything at your fingertips. There is a walk-in pantry and a large view window above the sink. One side of the kitchen is open to the family room, divided by a conversation counter where guests can kibbitz with the cook. For casual dining, a round beveled glass table sits in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows in the family room.
Enter the family room from the hallway that runs the length of the house, and be ushered in through tall columns to a relaxed space with comfortable couches and chairs, a flatscreen entertainment center and a raised-hearth gas fireplace. Also accessed from the hallway is a glass door to the wine storage room, a powder room with sink and toilet and a laundry room.
Continue down the hallway, which is done in pale hardwood and lined with windows that look to the circular drive, and you reach the first bedroom. An angled wall positions the queen bed for the views from the picture windows. A contemporary frame and furnishings, including a flatscreen TV, offset the lightly patterned duvet and pillows and the deep pile cream-colored carpet found in all the bedrooms. The shower and vanity are stone with cocoa wood cabinets and a wall of mirrors above a white ceramic sink and toilet. Three separate windows look out over olive trees and rosemary hedges to the peaceful hills.
Carpeted stairs at the end of the hall lead up to a spacious bedroom suite with a vaulted ceiling, a king bed and fabric headboard, sitting areas, flatscreen TV, desk and three “mini” balconies with glass doors that open for three different outlooks to the tranquil scenery. The en suite bathroom has a glass-front shower, custom counters, tile floors and shower and a mirrored wall above the toilet and vanity.
Take the hallway past the entryway and great room and enter a door to the master suite. This elegantly designed retreat is furnished with sumptuous fabrics and fine linens. Windows to the upper terrace and sunset views are above the sitting area, which is arranged around a fireplace inset into the wall for cool nights or to add a romantic note to the evening. Stay a few extra minutes in the downy king bed, or rise and immerse yourself in the large jetted spa tub, surrounded by windows with vistas that will invigorate you for the day. The bath has a door out to the terrace, double sink vanity and large glass-walled shower with two shower heads and a separate toilet.
Down the hallway from the master suite is the fourth bedroom with an angled wall that has a northerly outlook with a king bed and windows that frame the sunset. The bath has a mirrored wall over the custom vanity and the toilet. The shower is glass-enclosed and done in tiled stone.
At the end of the hall is a tranquil oasis embraced on one side by tall trees and quiet views of the valley. This bedroom has a serene feel to it. The bed, with its ornate, carved wood and fabric headboard, beckons for an escape from activity. There is a restful seating area next to the wall of paned glass windows that look down on the pool and lower terrace. The bathroom has a stone vanity and glass-walled shower over tub, and a window that perfectly frames the landscape scene.
But to fully experience the spirit of the Napa Valley’s true nature, you must descend to the lower terrace. Stretching the full length of the main residence, this stone terrace offers a panoply of activities. Plunge into the refreshing waters of a 60-foot infinity pool and work on your swim strokes if you can tear yourself away from the infinity wall of the pool and its breathtaking sensation. Pump it up indoors in a world-class gym and fitness studio with over a dozen workout machines, free weights room for aerobics and pilates or yoga, two TV monitors and three, floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls. Unwind in the massage room or the tiled steam room then shower in the large tiled bathroom and emerge for lunch at the gazebo refreshed and fit.
The gazebo houses a fully equipped kitchen with every amenity from a glass top range, ovens, warming trays, storage, refrigerator and dishwasher, down to an icemaker and wet bar—all done in gleaming stainless steel and is ringed with wrought iron railing. Dine under the sheltering slate roof at stone counters; mesh seating allows swimmers and sunbathers to come directly from the pool to eat. The open air setting is one of the best vantage points for views of the entire valley.
In addition to recreational activities, the beautifully manicured terrace offers an enticing setting for a cocktail party or celebration—the stone tile floor providing a great place for dancing under the stars. With its exceptional location and sublime panoramas of the legendary Napa Valley, Villa Vigne makes your stay in this magical region an unforgettable one.
