Thornsberry - Sonoma County

Exterior

As you drive up the meandering country lane to Thornsberry, each curve takes you further into the fascinating history of the Sonoma Valley. These hills and meadows played host to the earliest days of the wine industry.

From the deep wraparound porch, you look out toward the vineyards of Gundlach Bundschu Winery—the oldest family owned winery in California, established in 1859. Thornsberry is set on 20 acres and was totally remodeled to offer the finest contemporary amenities combined with an appreciation of the property’s history.

The grounds have been extensively landscaped to integrate with the native plants and vegetation. Lavender fields cover the slope of the hill and mint and rosemary cascade over low rock walls, mingling with the subtle hues of hydrangeas. Flowering vines drape the roof of the home, setting off its graceful lines, and ceramic pots filled with seasonal blooms create a splash of color amongst the trees.

The main house opens out on all sides to the outdoors, with views to the vineyards and the valley beyond, and tranquil vistas of the gardens and fields. Both the kitchen and living room open to a broad, crushed granite courtyard. Tall trees offer dappled shade and a built-in grilling station and a variety of seating arrangements extend the entertainment area from indoors to outside. As dusk descends, the lights in the trees give a festive cast to the scene. Speakers all around the house and its myriad porches bring music to each area.

Descending from the west-facing veranda are terraced gardens filled with flowers and herb and vegetable beds. A white lattice gazebo offers a charming setting to spend a romantic moment together under its rose-covered arbor. A few steps below is a semicircle of lawn ringed by a low rock wall and a backdrop of olive trees and hedges.

Behind the home, broad concrete stairs take you up to the sapphire waters of the swimming pool. Sheltered by rock walls and a flower-strewn hillside, the pool is surrounded by manicured shrubs and Italian Cypress trees. Enjoy the relaxing views to the western horizon in complete privacy.

Concealed from the main house by hedges and trees is a guest cottage. French doors open to the brick deck that looks out over the open field and lavender beds. Brilliant-hued bougainvillea vines frame the cottage, giving it a fairytale appearance. Sunsets can produce the most amazing colors and cloud formations, and the warm evenings lull you into watching the sky until the stars begin to appear.
