Bella Vista - Sonoma County
|
Wine Country is filled with intoxicating discoveries, and not all of them involve grapes. At Bella Vista you’ll find the incredible mountain top views of the valley floor, the distant hills and the wide blue skies, as exhilarating as the wines of the region.
Exterior
Bella Vista offers seclusion and sensational views from a phenomenal seven-acre setting on the Western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains. Each deck and level enjoys its own special part of the panorama that overlooks the brilliant green vineyards of the Sonoma Valley below and the distant western horizon. This boundless vista offers endlessly fascinating glimpses of the life around you. Hawks circle below, fluffy white clouds drift by, and the entire sky becomes an artist’s palette when the sun descends.
The newly upgraded home and separate guest house are surrounded by rows of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, terraced fruit trees, and hillsides of native plants. Stroll through the vineyards and track the growth of the grapes as they turn from green to a deep red. Along the way you’ll find a sheltered picnic table where you can pause for a snack or a cool drink. Or, take the path down to the solar-heated pool and its expansive entertainment area. Try your hand at the horseshoe court or play water games in the pool. Low rock walls line one side and a broad stone deck invites celebrations, pool parties or gatherings of family and friends. Roses lead the way to a vine-covered trellis at the far end. You can envision a wonderful picture under its lush foliage.
A large wood gazebo is perfect for an alfresco lunch or dinner. It looks out over the wooded hillside on three sides and is open to the pool. There are double stainless sinks, an under-counter refrigerator and preparation counter, and nearby is a barbeque station crafted from rustic stone with plentiful counter space. As the sun goes down, you’ll be drawn to the large, in-ground firepit for conversation or just contemplation of the flickering fire. A convenient half-bath is located on this level.
Interior
Designed to embrace the extraordinary location, Bella Vista is filled with natural light and stunning views from every room. Entering the home is a joyful experience. With its open spaces and plentiful windows, you feel the sense of freedom and exhilaration that is the real spirit of wine country.
The spacious great room is decorated in tawny hues and contemporary furnishings. Its wall of windows and glass doors open to the main deck and an unparalleled panorama of the Sonoma Valley. A floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace and media center divide the space from the informal dining room. The kitchen and dining rooms are a step up from the living area and share lustrous, rich brown floors and high, beamed ceilings painted a crisp white. The main dining area has windows that face a tranquil view of the porch and hillside and a large round table that brings people together in easy conversation and can seat eight. In the more informal eating area off the kitchen, marble counters and glass display cabinets frame the view to the south and glass doors open to the deck.
The well-appointed kitchen invites both the casual cook and the master chef to create delicious meals here. Custom-cut marble counters and an oversized marble center island provide an elegant work surface, and stainless steel appliances, including a four-burner range, double ovens and sub-zero refrigerator, make preparation a pleasure. Chrome and leather stools let guests join in at the center island.
Beyond the living area is a west-facing sitting room and bedroom with sea spray green carpet and cream-colored walls. The sitting room has a sofa bed and sliding glass doors to a private section of the deck where there is a table and chairs. The room can also be closed off from the bedroom and hallway. The bedroom offers views of the valley and mountains that you can revel in from the luxury of your queen size bed.
A second bedroom with a king bed has a restful outlook to the hillside and a French door to a small deck at the rear. There is an additional entrance from the deep veranda that runs the length of the house.
The two bedrooms share a generous bathroom finished in white subway tile with forest green accents and a green ceramic tile floor. There is a double sink vanity with a wall mirror, white cabinetry and a glass door shower over the tub. Windows to the trees add natural light to the room.
Up the broad carpeted stairway is the second story and a door to the superb master suite. Breathtaking views surround you on all sides, set off by the white-trimmed windows and cinnamon-toned walls. You can barely make out birds flying below and the road is like a ribbon on the valley floor. A soft carpet covers the entire suite, including the walk-in closet. There is a seating area, a desk and bookcases and Internet access. The king size bed with its sumptuous linens is the centerpiece of the room. The bed faces a large gas fireplace with a smooth, river rock surround. At night, its hypnotic flames create an intimate atmosphere.
The master bath is of spa proportions and features a double-size soaking tub. With windows all around, you’ll feel that you’re floating over the hillside as you relax in an aromatic bath. A high skylight illuminates by day and frames the stars at night. There is also a walk-in glass brick shower and an enclosed toilet. The separate vanity has dual sinks and mirrors. This suite is an oasis you won’t want to leave.
Across the driveway are the guest quarters with their own fantastic views. Newly redone, the guest house has a deck with ample room to share a glass of wine with friends and watch the sun set. It can be accessed by sliding glass doors from the bedroom or stairs. Carpeted in rich brown, the bedroom has a vaulted wood ceiling, a large overhead fan and a freestanding gas fireplace. There is a queen size bed and a comfortable couch and table. The bathroom is done in off-white ceramic tile and has a shower over the tub, a pedestal sink and apothecary cabinet and mirror and toilet.
Next to the bedroom is an entertainment and recreation room with hardwood floors and glass doors that look toward the main house. This multi-purpose room provides a place for games or watching your favorite TV shows or sporting events.
Bella Vista is sure to capture your imagination and thrill you with its inspiring views. You’ll find that each day here brings you closer to the remarkable qualities of this celebrated region.

In the rustic village of Glen Ellen, made famous by dashing author Jack London who built his dream home here, a pastoral quality still permeates the town and its surrounding vineyards and farms. Interwoven in and among the historic landmarks are a surprising number of fine restaurants and appealing cafes, most with a view to the creek or a lovely outdoor setting, where you’ll often spot sports figures, novelists or film industry icons that make this their home-away-from-home.
