Tall oak trees create a pattern of dappled shade that plays upon on the rolling hillside and stone path welcoming you to Casa Cavalli. This 3-story residence, with its extensive outdoor entertainment area, exudes casual sophistication and surrounds you with wine country comfort and elegance inside and out.
Exterior
The gentle undulations of Sonoma’s Western hills create a sheltering backdrop for Casa Cavalli. This tranquil and private property on over two acres enjoys the morning and evening light, and days can be spent sunning by the 40’ x 20’ cerulean blue pool or lounging under tall shade trees in the expansive entertainment lanai and surrounding terraces.
A short drive from the town’s center, the two-lane road to Casa Cavalli passes through premium vineyards and up to an area of horse farms and estates. As you enter the gates to the driveway and the parking court of smooth, European pavers, a profusion of roses along a low, rock wall adds a colorful accent to the home’s entrance. Tall redwood trees bring a serene and majestic element of calm, and oak trees spread their branches in a friendly embrace. Mature olive trees are interspersed throughout the landscape of native plants.
A wooden pergola and broad stone steps lead up to the front door and brick paths encircle the residence for easy exploration of the grounds. The home’s exterior draws upon the tones of the hills and the tall windows and carriage garage doors combine with the lower façade of natural rock for a rustic, yet sophisticated look. This same country elegance is expressed in the design of the outdoor spaces, with abundant room for celebrations, family gatherings, outdoor dining and recreation.
The multi-level entertainment area is filled with gardens, terraces and decks, designed to be used either as one large space or as a variety of individual environments. The solar-heated pool is the centerpiece of the flagstone lanai and all three floors of the home overlook this gorgeous setting.
Interior
A three-story foyer greets you as you enter Casa Cavalli, creating a bold visual impression and giving a radiant glow to each landing. The foyer and first floor rooms feature French limestone floors with slate detail.
Well-chosen contemporary furnishings and home décor enhance the spacious, and light rooms and an equestrian motif can be seen in the fine original art and accent pieces. Beyond the foyer is a glass door to a media/family room with a large-screen TV and an ultrasuede couch and chaise. The room is open to a seating/dining area with a picnic-style table and benches and a free-standing enameled gas stove. Windows overlook the lanai and sliding glass doors open to a trellis-covered area adjacent to the pool.
A full bath, finished in sage green walls, rich granite vanity and a carved stone sink, has a glass-front shower and stone tile floors. Also from the first floor, you can access the three-car garage and a lower level workout room with sliding glass doors to the pool.
Two separate sets of stairs take you up to the second floor and a kitchen that will dazzle and delight the casual cook or the professional chef. Quarter-sawn oak floors reflect the gleaming stainless steel appliances and granite counters. A four-burner gas range and oven, under-counter wine cooler, convection oven, dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer make preparing meals a pleasure. The kitchen flows into a solarium with floor to ceiling windows and a view of the town below in the distance. Start your day with a sunny breakfast at the wooden farmhouse table and chairs. Or, decide to have your coffee in the fresh morning air—sliding glass doors lead to a large wooden deck that overlooks the pool.
The formal dining room is just down a short hallway. This inviting room with its subtle tones, beamed ceiling and floor to ceiling views to the east and to the oak and redwood trees, offers the perfect place to share delicious food, great wines and good conversation.
Slim columns divide the dining and living room—a few steps below the kitchen and dining level. A wonderfully generous space with a wall of windows to the west, the living room beckons family and friends to its comfortably elegant setting. For the musically inclined, there is an ebony baby grand piano, or simply sink back in the off-white sofas and chairs and relax in front of the massive stone fireplace.
On the other side of the kitchen, is a large bathroom, tiled in white ceramic and accented by Tuscan yellow walls. The vanity has double sinks with whimsical bronze “pump handle” fixtures and there is a glass-front, tiled shower over tub.
Beyond is a spacious bedroom carpeted in deep, plush pile. The white, four-poster bed, woven chairs, and light lemon walls and white trim, create a fresh quality, heightened by the windows overlooking the pool and sliding glass door that opens to the long wooden deck.
At the end of the hall is an office with desk, comfortable leather chair, Internet access and glass doors to the wood deck.
A second bedroom with plush carpeting and soft mustard toned walls, looks out to the front of the house and views of the rose gardens and grounds. The hand-carved four-poster bed, flanked by Asian side tables and lamps, and rich brown leather chairs offers a restful environment.
Also on the west side of the home, a third bedroom with a spiral-carved, four-poster bed, woven chairs and a calming view to the trees, takes on a country character. All beds have high quality linens and bedding, enticing you to spend just a few minutes more in their cozy warmth.
Up a short flight of stairs is the master retreat—a full floor with a luxuriant spa, a sitting room/den, an expansive bedroom, a huge walk-in dressing room and closet and two decks. This private suite allows you to indulge yourself and truly get away to your own secluded oasis.
A tropical fan hangs over the king-sized bed, set between two mirrored closet doors. Nearby is a seating area where you can curl up with a book or magazine, or watch your favorite show on the large-screen TV. A vintage desk offers a place to write postcards or access the Internet, and below the east-facing windows is a carved chaise where you can contemplate the beauty of the countryside from your third-story vantage point.
A separate sitting room/den provides an area for conversation, playing board games or cards. Double doors close the area off from the foyer landing and at the other end, glass doors open out to a sheltered deck with a café table and chairs. Uncork a bottle of Sonoma Valley wine and toast the moment together.
For complete pampering, immerse yourself in the luxurious spa. Beautiful limestone tiles in rich hues surround the oversized jetted tub, and continue in the glass-front shower, with its dual controls and shower heads. The tiled design creates an exotic counterpoint to the white wainscotting and the vaulted angles of the ceiling. The bath has two white pedestal sinks and apothecary cabinets above the vanities and a window that frames the Japanese maple and oak trees against the blue sky.
Casa Cavalli interprets wine country living in a new and exciting way, bringing a sophisticated element to the coveted indoor-outdoor lifestyle of this famed region.
