Finocchieto Manor House-Borgo Finocchieto - Tuscany, Italy

Introduction to Borgo Finocchieto

Nestled on a rural hillside in the province of Siena in central Tuscany, Borgo Finocchieto is an 800-year-old farming village located directly on the historic Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome. This route specifically connected the monastic stopovers of Monte Oliveto and Sant’Antimo and most likely hosted scores of pilgrims, merchants and adventurers. Through centuries past the Borgo has stood steadfast and strong as a resting and meeting point for travelers. Abandoned by its most recent inhabitants in the 1960s, the Borgo has since been revived to create a special place where families, business leaders, intellectuals and vacationing groups can join together in an exceptional setting to celebrate, contemplate and savor life.

The Borgo encompasses 22 suites in the manor house and four village home, arranged around a central piazza functioning as its own community. Gathering spaces include a formal dining room and outdoor dining terrace, living room with grand piano and study, screening room, library, bar, conference facility for up to 50, cantina and wine tasting room, a professional teaching kitchen, an interior arcaded courtyard, a piazza, and extensive lawn and garden spaces with various shaded benches and a gazebo.

Recreational facilities include a 60’ oval swimming pool, a state of the art fitness center, spa, tennis and basketball court, and bocce court. Individual suites are ample, luxurious, and private, while the public spaces encourage people to draw together for community to form and flourish naturally.

The cuisine and service available at Borgo Finocchieto uphold the Tuscan traditions of outstanding wine, delicious food and friendly hospitality, which has been cultivated for centuries. Families and friends will find the Borgo to be a fantastic vacation destination, within close proximity to both Florence and Rome.

Finocchieto Manor House

The manor house of the medieval village, Finocchieto's foundations date to the fourteenth century. Recent renovations have taken the historic house to a level of great comfort without compromising the original integrity of its design or spirit of its old stone walls and rustic ceiling beams.

Downstairs is a carefully stocked library and reading room with a fireplace and chess table for indoor entertainment. Our collection includes selections chosen to satiate your curiosity of Italian history, archaeology, art, music, and literature. Next door to the library is a state-of-the-art media room with a large screen HD television and surround sound system. We are pleased to offer the Criterion classic film collection and a large selection of Italian interest materials from The Teaching Company, as well as a Playstation and Nintendo Wii with your choice of games.

Also downstairs is the estate's barrel vaulted, historic cantina next door to our wine tasting room with an antique grape press. Our collection of crystal from Colle Val d'Elsa is specifically chosen to enhance Tuscan wines.

In the northern wing of the manor house is our 1,000 sq ft conference facility and ballroom for fifty. The modular furniture can be adjusted to suit any group's needs, whether the aim is to enhance informal discussion or to best facilitate presentations by individuals from the stage at front. The room is wired to provide power connections for individual notebooks, etc. Technological features are designed to accommodate any group with state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and projectors for a variety of interactive presentations and displays.

The main staircase connecting the front entrance to the first floor gathering spaces is one of the oldest parts of the house. For hundreds of years, a steady stream of traffic has shaped grooves in the red bricks of the historic steps. At their top, a stone-carved Borghese crest greets visitors as they enter the formal dining room, emphasizing the high origins of the manor house at Finocchieto. The space inside is painted in formal Sienese style, from cues left on the wall prior to the restoration. Large, banquet style tables with fabulously intricate wooden inlay adjust to multiple configurations for approximately forty-four guests or fewer and will be tailored specifically to your group.

To the right is the family dining room, an elegant but cozy space thanks to the interesting architectural feature of a cove ceiling. The beautiful highly detailed space is wonderful for more intimate gatherings and promotes comfortable discourse among small groups of up to ten.

Outside two sets of French doors from the dining room is the dining terrace, which seats an additional twenty to thirty guests. the space offers shade in the morning for a pleasant breakfast, as well as the perfect sunset view and lantern-lit ambiance in the evenings.

Next to the dining rooms is the kitchen complex. Our state-of-the-art teaching kitchen is designed to prep meals for large groups and accommodate up to fifteen observers for cooking lessons. The attached family kitchen is for guest convenience. The refrigerator is typically stocked with snacks by Luigi. The oven, range, sink, etc. are at your disposal for preparing your own meals. The rustic table and fireplace make this a cozy place for casual family meals or roasting chestnuts.

The main floor of the manor house also offers several sitting rooms. The large, elegant living room offers several seating areas around a fireplace and a Yamaha grand piano.

The manor house is wired with a central music system with wall controls in individual rooms as well as the greater gathering spaces.
