Golden Retreat - Sonoma County
What do Nautilus shells, the Mona Lisa, and the Italian mathematician Fibonacci have in common with this stunning house in the middle of Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley? They’re all based on the Golden Ratio. In design circles (pun intended there), the Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics, creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. The mathematician who drew up plans for this home had the same ideals in mind. The result is a five-bedroom compound with sweeping views of private estate vineyards, manicured gardens, and more. Indoor living spaces are dappled with natural light; an expansive outdoor living space features multiple vantage points for dozens of different perspectives. The gem of the Sonoma vacation rental is the bathroom suite off the main bedroom—this spa-quality amenity comprises two walk-in closets, a double-headed shower, and a soaking tub with a bird’s eye view of rows upon rows of grapevines. The Wine Country experience doesn’t get more luxurious than this.
Interior
Everything inside this palatial compound flows effortlessly—clearly the effect of the Golden Ratio at work. In the 3-bedroom main house, comfy couches in the living rom give way to a well-appointed dining room, which, in turn, connects to a tremendous kitchen. A double-sided fireplace heats both the kitchen and the living room again; it, like the rest of the house, is one big circle. The house really comes to life in the bedrooms. The main bedroom looks out on manicured gardens and connects to that bathroom suite, which is nearly twice the size of the bedroom itself. One could spend the better part of a day in the tub; it looks out on the vineyard through a giant circular window. Other bedrooms are cozier but just as elegant; each has its own bathroom.
The 2-bedroom guest house, which shares a patio with the main structure, has soaring ceilings and plenty of open space. One bedroom has a fancy Murphy bed; when it’s stored in the wall the room doubles as a media room.
Exterior
The outdoor grounds of this Wine Country vacation rental are exquisite. Acres upon acres of vineyards surround the buildings on three sides, unfolding in the distance like rows of corduroy. To access the front door, guests pass through a walled Japanese garden, complete with a koi pond, Japanese maples, and bubbling water features. Out back, manicured lawns and gardens give way to glorious rose bushes with buds in pink, red, yellow, and orange. There’s a Bocce court, a lap pool, and hot tub. There’s also 4,000 square feet of contiguous patio space and various forms of seating. Close your eyes and listen to the chirping birds and the leaves of the trees swaying in the wind. The true treasure of the Golden Retreat is privacy.
Other Amenities
Simple, elegant touches are plentiful at this luxury getaway. An outdoor kitchen with a gas grill and a Big Green Egg sits between the main house and the guest house, perfectly positioned to prep food for backyard soiree. The main house also has a fitness room with an elliptical trainer, treadmill, step machine, and free weights. There’s an outdoor shower at the guest house, which also sports a unique roof design that becomes a water feature in the rain. A narrow (and sometimes overgrown) trail leads from the Bocce court down to the creek.
Location
The Golden Retreat is smack in the middle of the Dry Creek Valley, a narrow winegrowing region that runs due west from downtown Healdsburg. The home is about a 15 minute drive (or a 30-minute bike ride) from the Healdsburg Plaza, and a 10-minute drive (or 20-minute bike ride) from Lake Sonoma. It is just up a small hill from the valley’s namesake Dry Creek, and the compound is surrounded by estate vineyards.
