Tree House - Sonoma County

All the privacy and beauty of a secluded retreat just minutes from the delightful village of Glen Ellen and the famed wineries of Sonoma Valley.

It’s a pleasant surprise to find that a serene and pastoral getaway can be so close and yet so private. Just moments from the charming village of Glen Ellen and its cafes, restaurants and tasting rooms, The Tree House looks out to hillsides of pristine woodlands covered in shades of green.

Up a short driveway puts you above the tree line and opens wide vistas toward the western hills. The natural shingles and deep green accents and trim integrate the home into the environment, and wooden decks offer a variety of settings and outlooks to share together—just as beautiful in the evening as in the day.

A sandstone path curves past the house and the low rock walls that highlight the native plants, succulents and grasses. Just outside the kitchen is a long stucco retaining wall topped by a wood trellis. This sunny spot is a lovely place to breakfast in the fresh morning air. Later in the day, put the barbeque grill to good use, along with the built-in brick pizza oven and see how much better food tastes outdoors.

The pool has abundant room for dining, celebrations and pool parties, and the decks are surrounded by a contemporary wood and wire fence. You’ll find it hard to resist spending some time in the chaise lounges when your view is a sparkling turquoise pool and an unbroken line of trees in the distance. Set the table for lunch under the dappled shade of a tall tree and sip on some of Sonoma’s premium Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Rose wines produced at the nearby vineyards.

If biking the country roads or hiking the trails in Jack London’s beloved Glen Ellen has given you a workout, slip into the bubbling whirlpool hot tub. Easily accessible from the path to the pool or from both levels of the house, this relaxing spa has its own stone deck where you can look up through the lofty branches and enjoy the blue skies and warm breezes during the day and the millions of starts above at night.

Designed to be in harmony with its tranquil setting, The Tree House will make you feel as though you’re home. There is a simple and joyous connection to the environment that lets you take a deep breath and unwind.

From the moment you step into the entryway, lit softly by a skylight overhead, you begin to see that each area of the home has its own special feel, brought to life by its relationship to the surroundings.

The sunny kitchen, with its white walls and vaulted ceiling, opens out through wide glass doors to the sandstone patio. An outdoor table and chairs provide the perfect place to take your morning coffee or have an al fresco lunch. Cooking is a breeze with a Weber grill and a built-in brick pizza oven. Inside there is a casual dining area that connects with the kitchen. The blond wood cabinets and center preparation island are offset by black stone counters and stainless steel appliances.

In the living room, walls of windows create a tapestry of greens and golds that are subtly echoed in the natural beamed ceiling and the polished wood floors. A brick fireplace anchors one end of the room where two large sofas invite people to gather in conversation or watch a favorite show or game on the large flatscreen TV. The other end of the room has a dining table that overlooks the treetops and distant hills. A door opens to the deck, built around a tall oak tree, where a café table and chairs offer a spot where you can let yourself experience the contentment of the vista.

There is a guest bedroom on this level with a four-poster queen-size bed and a wall of windows that enjoy quiet views of the trees. Step up to the en-suite bath, which has a shower over the tub and a contemporary vanity with ceramic sink. A mirrored door separates the bathroom from the bedroom.

Stairs lead from the entryway to the home’s lower level and the master bedroom—an oasis of calm and privacy. A sumptuous, king-size bed is framed by windows, bathing the room in a subdued natural light. Pale, sea-spray green walls and white trim add to the soothing ambience and dark leather chairs provide a comfortable seating area. The bath is finished in white ceramic tile and there is a large, walk-in glass shower with a Rainhead fixture. The contemporary carved wood vanity with its ceramic sink is topped by a mirrored wall and matching wood trim.

Also on this level is a media room, with a flatscreen TV and a day bed to curl up on with a book or magazine, or relax and let the afternoon sun lull you into a short nap. The cozy space can be used as an extra bedroom.

The hallway’s stone tile floors take you to a glass door that opens out onto a walkway to the hot tub and pool. The Tree House was created to bring you close to your surroundings, letting you bask undisturbed in the pastoral setting. Whether indoors or out, you’ll luxuriate in the special character of the Sonoma wine country in this lovely property.
